Sean Carroll: TED Talk

What's brillant is not the science so much, which is amazing, but rather Sean's ability to communicate our current understanding of what the universe is, and will be. If you've never watched any of the TED talks, Sean Carrol's is as good as any to start with.

You can join me in my summer readings with Sean Carroll's From Eternity to Here: The Quest for the Ultimate Theory of Time (Dutton Adult: , 2010), pp 448.

Mars Rover Goes Silent

Sadly, today, NASA confirmed news that was as inevitable as it was unwelcome: the final command will be sent to the Red Planet on Wednesday, and orbiting Mars satellites will cease search operations at the end of the month.

The Other Newton

  • James Gleick. "Isaac Newton's Gravity." Slate. October 21, 2004: 3:27 PM. Article.1

Newton opened a door to our world, sure. But he belonged to the world we have left behind.

Gliek's 2005 article and his 2003 book titled aptly Isaac Newton gives an important view of one of history's most acclaimed scientists, and loneliest. In the Slate article Gleick reveals the abandoned child, and who as an adult had few friends, no wife, or lovers. He lead a life of the solitary genius. It is one we celebrate at a mythological scale, but with the aid of Gliek's research, pity the person on a human one.

Though Gliek's article is now six years old, it is still worth time to read and reflect that one of the men behind the world we live in are still just men. Great article.

  1. I link the article to Slate for easy reading and it is the original publication of Gleick's article. My original source however, is from Alan Lightman, Ed. The Best American Science Writing 2005, (Harper Perennial: New York, 2005), 6-10.
